Chords, Tabs, Sheet Music and Covers

I'll have to find a tuner like yours, Erin--mine is just a basic "autotuner" that only tells me when each string is in standard tune. (I'm such a novice . . . Andrew will never notice me, at this rate! ) Thanks for the tip, though!

By the way, it's really cool that more people are trying to figure out how to play Kris's music, and that they're going beyond LLWD. It's great that people find his songs worthy of being covered!
Here's Kris's page at ultimateguitar.com, which lists songs that people have figured out the chords to:
http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/kris_allen_tabs.htm
(Who knew that so many people wanted to learn how to play No Boundaries?)

From upthread:
melvel, someone on ultimateguitar page has posted the tab for CSA, if that helps! (I can only play chords, though, can't read tabs!)

This is the one I use, efm, and if I remember correctly it costs about $20, so it won't break the bank.

Guitar tabs are actually really easy to read once someone shows you how (I know, they look like they're written in Chinese or something. Heh.) I'll try to explain -- the six lines on a tab represent the six strings of the guitar. The top line is the high-e string. The next one down is the b-string, and so forth. Set your guitar on your lap and look down at it. That's what the lines represent, in that order:

e -------------------------------
b -------------------------------
g -------------------------------
d -------------------------------
a -------------------------------
E -------------------------------

The numbers represent which fret you would press each string down in. An E-chord, in tablature, looks like this:

e -------------0------------------
b -------------0------------------
g -------------1------------------
d -------------2------------------
a -------------2------------------
E -------------0------------------

A 0 means you leave the string open, and an X means that you mute the string. So an A-minor would look like this:

e --------------0-----------------
b --------------1-----------------
g --------------2-----------------
d --------------2-----------------
a --------------0-----------------
E --------------x-----------------

If you're just playing chords, then you really don't need to learn how to read a tab, but for lead parts it's really helpful. Like, the easiest lead part ever is the intro to Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters," which would look like this:

e -----------0-----------------0-----------------0--------------
b --------0-----0-----------0-----0-----------0-----0-----------
g -----0-----------0-----0-----------0-----0-----------0--------
d ---------------------------------------------------------------
a ---------------------------------------------------------------
E --0-----------------0-----------------0------------------0-----

The only thing you have to get used to is that your brain looks at the top line and wants to interpret that as "top string," but it's actually backwards. Does that help?

ETA: I just checked out the tab for "Can't Stay Away," and it looks correct. Unfortunately for me I'm even worse at power chords than I am at barre chords. Heh.

Edited again because the d- and g-strings are not the same.

Thanks for the link to your tuner, Erin, and for the primer on reading tabs--I'll work on this!

I have Erin's same tuner, and I can confirm that it's very affordable (or else I wouldn't have gotten it, lol!) IIRC in the 10-15 dollar range on Amazon, and I bet they carry it at any music shop.

Oh my god, I love this topic. I just bought a Takamine acoustic, but I'm a total novice. All I can play is the opening chords to Free Fallin'. Erin, your explanation on how to read tabs is awesome.

Someone posted in the comments of the I Need To Know youtube guitar cover what they think the chords are. They said with the capo on the third fret, it should be G, D, Em7 for the verses, and the intro it looks like she picks D, G, Em7. I haven't really tried it out yet, since I still have to figure out how to play Em7. (The tabs posted on that site that was linked show G, A, and C instead, so... not sure which one is more accurate!)

No problem, traininvain. (Love your SN, by the way. My favorite Clash song!)

I'll try out "I Need to Know" when I get home. There are, like, 12 different ways to play Em7. A few of 'em are here.
